Sankofa is of the Twi language, belonging to the Akan Tribe of Ghana. It means to "to return, to go fetch". This term is often represented by a mythical bird, walking forward while looking back holding an egg in its mouth. The egg represents history being carried into the present and future.
"...their thing became music...they taught my brother, my sisters, and me about music and about church...they taught us everything they knew."
